The new Australian alcohol guidelines: what happens now?

Thursday 16 July 2009

16 July
The national health and Medical Reserach Council (NHMRC) recently released the Australian guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol. These new guidelines are different in many ways from the previous ones (NHMRC 2001) and aim to establish the evidence base on reducing alcohol-related health risks. The DrugInfo Clearinghouse hosted a free interactive seminar and forum exploring some of these issues in Melbourne on Thursday, 16 July 2009.

Pharmaceutical misuse: issues and perspectives

Wednesday 25 February 2009

25 February
Most people would identify "drug problems" with illicit drugs, such as cannabis, heroin, methamphetamine and ecstasy, maybe even alcohol. Few people would think about the misuse of pharmaceutical drugs. However, there are a number of prescribed or over-the-counter medicines that have the potential to be misused. The DrugInfo Clearinghouse hosted a free interactive seminar and forum exploring some of these issues in Melbourne on Wednesday, 25 February 2009.

Amphetamines: good practice in prevention

Tuesday 7 October 2008

7 October
The use of amphetamine in Australia is of increasing concern to the community. This has resulted in a corresponding need for the government and services to provide relevant information, support, treatment and management strategies that address the needs of people who use amphetamine. The DrugInfo Clearinghouse hosted a free interactive seminar and forum exploring some of these issues in Melbourne on Tuesday, 7 October 2008.

Alcohol and young people: the role of parents

Wednesday 16 July 2008

16 July
The misuse of alcohol in adolescence is linked to increased risk of alcohol dependence and other social and health inequalities in adulthood. Many factors influence the drinking behaviour of young people and one of the most important of these is their relationship with their parents. Health professionals have an important role in supporting families and carers concerned about preventing alcohol-related harm in their children. The DrugInfo Clearinghouse hosted a free interactive seminar and forum exploring some of these issues in Melbourne on Wednesday, 16 July 2008.

Prevention of harm from alcohol consumption in rural and remote communities

9 April 2008
Evidence shows that alcohol consumption is disproportionately higher in rural and remote regions of Australia compared with metropolitan areas. There is also evidence that services and systems that might otherwise prevent or reduce harm from alcohol consumption are less readily available in rural and remote communities. The DrugInfo Clearinghouse hosted a free interactive seminar and forum exploring some of these issues in Melbourne on Wednesday, 9 April 2008.

Creating synergy between mental health and drug and alcohol sectors: can we really work together?

4 December 2007
In recent years there has been an increased focus on the link between drug and alcohol misuse and mental health problems. Although we now have an increased understanding of comorbidity, there has to date been a lack of synergy between the drug and alcohol and mental health sectors. This seminar aims to raise the key issues we face, as well as look to the future so that we can create synergy for the prevention and early intervention of drug and alcohol and mental health problems.

Culturally and linguistically diverse communities and drug prevention: overcoming the barriers

30 October 2007
Cultural awareness and sensitivity to the needs of new and established immigrants are concerns that have been increasingly highlighted across the community, health and welfare sectors in recent years. This seminar looks at the issues and barriers to prevention work with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) communities.

Structural interventions: enabling or controlling?

Structural approaches attempt to change human behaviour by modifying the environment in which individuals love, work and play. Prevention and recreational drug use: What are we doing?

5 December 2005
There is a growing body of research into ecstasy and related drugs (“party drugs”). Much of this research focuses on the prevalence of use, with a growing body of contextual research. There is, however, less research into prevention and what works. This seminar aimed to highlight issues related to prevention and the recreational use of ecstasy and related drugs, and to consider possible ways forward, including education, harm reduction, legislation, mass media and other strategies. In this report we provide a summary of each speaker’s presentation and questions and discussion from the audience.

Mass media campaigns: how effective are they as a prevention strategy?
